Mets Coaching Staff to Return in 2013
Prior to last night’s game in Miami Terry Collins met with Mets brass (Fred Wilpon, Jeff Wilpon, Sandy Alderson & Co.) who flew down to begin discussions of off-season strategy and planning. One of the things that has already been decided is that Terry Collins and the entire coaching staff will return for 2013. Bench coach Bob Geren, hitting coach Dave Hudgens, pitching coach Dan Warthen, bullpen coach Rickey Bones, and base coaches Tom Goodwin and Tim Teufel will all be retained at their current positions. Wally Backman, who has been coaching with the Mets since the Triple-A season concluded said he has yet to be given an assignment within the organization for the 2013 season.
I’m not one to blame coaching for poor performance, because ultimately talent prevails and if there isn’t any then the coaches are going into a gun fight with a knife. But it does seem the Mets have been accepting of mediocrity for some time now. As we wind down a fourth straight losing season and 4th place finish here is a look at where the Mets rank in the National League (16 teams) with the help of these fine coaches:
Hitting
Batting Average - .249 (10th)
Home Runs – 136 (11th)
Stolen Bases – 79 (15th)
On-Base Percentage - .316 (11th)
Strikeouts – 1235 (7th)
Pitching
Earned Run Average – 4.11 (11th)
Home Runs Allowed – 159 (10th)
Strikeouts – 1218 (7th)

Fielding
