Off-Season Gets Underway
The San Francisco Giants’ World Series win last night, started the clock on the 2013 MLB off-season. The immediate impacts facing the Mets will be David Wright and R.A. Dickey. As per Wright’s contract, his 2013 option for $16 million must be picked up within three days of the World Series’ completion. Dickey’s $5 million option must be exercised by the MLB mandated five days after the conclusion of the World Series. It is expected that both of these players’ option will be exercised while the front office and their agents continue to negotiate long-term deals.
Another aspect of the off-season that has kicked into gear is free-agency. Beginning Saturday at 12:01am team can begin to contact free agents. There is an extensive list broken down by team of eligible free agents that the Players’ Association releases and Adam Rubin has that entire list here. Here are the 2012 Mets set to become a free agent in the early hours Saturday morning:
Tim Byrdak (LHP)
Ronny Cedeno (INF)
Scott Hairston (OF)
Ramon Ramirez (RHP)
Jon Rauch (RHP)
Kelly Shoppach (C)
Chris Young (RHP)
All players are expected to seek option away from the Mets, and the Mets seem willing to let most walk. The few the Mets would consider resigning seem to be Byrdak (won’t be available until August or September due to surgery), Cedeno and Hairston. Cedeno and Hairston will likely seek multi-year deals or more playing time, something the Mets aren’t in any position to guarantee.
